We are opening a hostel in the center of Cardiff. We have a lovely Victorian building with listed features and will be aiming to get 5-star status. Though the accommodation and customer service will be 5-star, the price won't be.

The idea is born…

About a year ago, myself and a friend decided to open a hostel in Cardiff. We have both traveled a bit and visited many hostels and saw something that our city seemed to be lacking. Cardiff has some really cheap places to stay but the service is not that great and there are some amazing places but there is an amazing price to go with them. What we want to offer is an exceptional stay with a warm and friendly staff, but something that is comparably priced and won’t cost a fortune for someone on a budget.

What we did with the idea…

We found a lovely building, set up our company, wrote our business plan, got a few investors, set up our name and branding, and did a whole lot of other stuff that goes along with starting a business. Over the summer we did a lot of research into Welsh tourism and dug a little deeper into the history of Cardiff and our building, while we were negotiating the lease and securing planning permission. Our planning permission was granted in December and work has now started on the building.

What is going on now…

The landlord has agreed to do some repairs and deep clean the exterior stone work of the building and the scaffolding is up now. While that is going on, we’ve taken out a few interior walls and met with contractors. As soon as the exterior is completed our work refurbishing the interior can begin in earnest and we’re hoping to open, at least in part, by December. We’re going to finish the Ground Floor, First Floor and Second Floor and start letting by then, with the two upper floors to be completed after that.

What the building is like...

There is a massive vault door in the basement and for several years the building was used by an auctioneer. We have several Victorian safes which will be placed throughout the building. There is also a Grade II listed staircase and several listed fireplaces in the building. Our aim is to restore this building and bring it back to its former glory. We’ve removed 1980s drop-down ceilings and carpets that have revealed amazing ceilings and parquet floors and we’ll be restoring all of these.

We are having bespoke bunks built by a local cabinet maker to go into our dorm rooms. These will offer a quality night’s sleep and have some extra touches to provide some privacy and comfort. They will all have curtains, a light, a personal USB port, ample storage space and everything else we can think of to make a stay away from home a bit more memorable.

We will also be giving walking tours of Cardiff and have bikes to rent. We want everyone who comes to Cardiff to enjoy this city as much as we do. We’re obviously running this as a business venture but our real passion lies with travelling and meeting new people from around the world.

What's next...

We have raised some money already and work on the building has started. What we are trying to do now is raise a bit more so we can get the hostel open by the end of this year and implement all of the extra little things that will make our hostel a special place for everyone who visits. We’ve put together some great rewards and hope you’ll be able to help us out and come visit us in return.

What we plan to do with the money...

  • Building costs and redecorating (the extra bits) - we’d really like to restore rooms to the original as much as possible, rather than just finish them with a modern look. Reception and the café for example have really nice parquet floors which we originally didn’t know were there. There are added touches and features throughout the residents’ lounge, bedrooms and toilets that we’d also be able to refurbish. This is where the bulk of the funds we raise will go.
  • Refurbish upper 2 floors (sooner rather than later) – we’ve budgeted to complete the interior of the building. However at this point we would have to leave the two upper floors for a later phase. With your help we could complete these sooner and to a higher quality.
  • Bicycles and excursions (more and better) - We are going to offer free walking tours and have a few bikes already. We’d eventually like to have more bikes available and eventually have a van to take guests on day trips to the beach or Brecon Beacons. Any extra funds we raise will go towards this.
  • Marketing (the dream fund, if we do really well) – So far we’ve relied on word of mouth and social media to spread the news about our hostel and Cardiff. If we do really well with this campaign we’ll spend the money on some added marketing. We have several ideas we’d love to put in place if we had more funds.
